Accessibility

Last updated 26 August 2026. Haven is a learning platform. If someone cannot use it, they cannot learn on it. That makes accessibility part of the product rather than a compliance exercise.

Semantic HTML

Structure is real markup, so screen readers and assistive technology can interpret it.

Menus, dialogs and form controls handle keyboard interaction and ARIA attributes correctly by default.

Errors are described in text, not by colour alone. Layouts hold up zoomed and on small screens.

Generally more robust for assistive technology than content assembled in the browser.

What we are aiming for

We are working towards WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

We have not yet completed a formal audit, so we do not claim to conform to it. When we have been independently assessed, we will say so here and publish the date.

What we have done

Haven is built with accessible foundations rather than retrofitted ones.

Semantic HTML, so screen readers and assistive technology can interpret structure

Radix UI primitives for interactive components — menus, dialogs, form controls

Keyboard navigation through interactive elements, with visible focus indicators

Labelled form fields with errors described in text, not by colour alone

Responsive layouts that work when zoomed and on small screens

Server-rendered pages, generally more robust for assistive technology

What we know is not right yet

Being specific is more useful than being reassuring.

No formal audit has been carried out. There will be issues we have not found.

No screen reader testing with NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver has been completed.

Colour contrast has not been verified across every component against the 4.5:1 requirement for body text.

Course content is created by teachers. We do not currently require image descriptions or check readability, so accessibility varies between courses.

Video captions are not supported, because video lessons are not yet part of Haven. Captioning will be a requirement when they are, not an afterthought.

No skip-navigation link on pages with long sidebars.

Some images may lack meaningful alternative text.
